Might be using this blog more often.

At one point I considered implementing blogging functionality directly on my personally-hosted webserver, but the feature set that Blogger offers suits this use case better.

On that note, got my personal webserver back up and running... again. The hosting service has to be running their storage arrays on refurbished HDDs, I swear...
Did provide the opportunity to move forward with strict SSL standards though. Takes forever to generate a new dhparams key.

Dusting off the blog... again.

Been ages since I've touched this blog. Too many times I've abandoned it. Maybe adopting some sort of app for my mobile devices would make it easier to post regular entries here.
Time has passed... what is it, over two years now? I've moved into a position at Staples, as a "Tech Sales Associate." This mainly involves assisting customers with their tech problems, and providing solutions. I initially took the job for the opportunity to work on computers and help people work with their own. Over time though, it became clear that the position is more "sales" than "tech;" while I would prefer to spend the day in my natural element, there's a corporate push to meet sales metrics, so I have to encourage customers to purchase items and the complementary protection plans. To be fair, the protection plans offered aren't all that bad; for an expensive device like an $800+ laptop, you'd definitely want a warranty on it. There are instances where the plans don't make sense; buying a ~$4 protection on an ~$8 item is kinda silly. I do try to push customers to invest in protection plans when it's in their best interest. It's a full money-back guarantee if something goes awry. I sometimes doubt the veracity of corporate-think when the language they use is "sales metrics" instead of "customer service."
Not much has changed at home; we're still living at a sub-$10K/year income. Last week I got lucky to have 40 hours of work, but most weeks only have me scheduled for 15-20 hours. Makes it a bit tough to pay bills for the bare necessities as the sole source of income for the household. For the past six months I've been looking for ancillary employment that would work in concert with Staples' arbitrary scheduling. Aside from a full-time offer from Kirk at The Wright PC (a computer repair shop just down the road), I haven't had much luck filling out the holes in my work schedule. Kirk already has all the help he currently needs around the shop, so unless an opening becomes available, there's no opportunity as of yet.
As for my free time, I've been dumping hours into Warframe, a "space ninja shooter-looter" that I've come back to after a long hiatus. I was an early adopter, and still have some of the exclusive loot from the early days. I've been soloing the game for a while, and am unsure about whether I should join up with a clan for social play. Aside from the benefits of the social ingame mechanics, it would be nice to have others to socialize with.
I've been helping out a Staples customer with their work on a business project on the side. While I do try to tell them I'll do it completely pro-bono, they keep insisting on paying me tips. Honestly, I'm happy to have a any little bit of side income to help pay bills, but accepting money for work I enjoy doing still feels weird. I've had customers often tell me that I shouldn't shy away for being paid for my time, and that it's just the way business works. Maybe I'm too mentally invested in the idea of economics as proposed in Star Trek. *shrug*

I'm Back.

Thankfully Blogger is still a thing. I've spun up and destroyed so many VPS website hosts for personal use... I figure it'll be best to use this as an actual blog, and relegate my other resources to more... useful things.

So here I am, at the office at 3AM, finishing off the last bits of the previous day's work. There wasn't all that much to actually do; I just took my time with it and clocked out at a normal time. Being able to work off the clock at my own pace is great for the quality of work performed.

I've had a lot of quiet time lately, where I can think in peace. Supposedly introversion is something people avoid, vying instead for music or other noise to keep their thoughts drowned out. It's understandable. Sometimes thoughts can get... dangerous.

Lately my income has been a bit tight, with the limited hours I can spend clocked in due to the slow flow of work available. Supporting my parents on ~$9000/year isn't exactly feasible. If current filial obligation wasn't holding me down, my current income would be more than sufficient. Leaving isn't exactly something I can easily do, however. Not only because doing so would be selfish, but also because of promises I've made to not be that kind of person. Even if it were out of financial self-preservation, it would still be... not something I can do. I have no choice but to bleed out my time.

Taking on a second job seems to be the only recourse at the moment. My current job allows for flexible hours, with work that can be done at any hour of the day. I may take on a full-time position at Best Buy's Geek Squad, as it fits my aptitude for tech. There seem to be positions available at a local Wal-Mart Marketplace, but... eh. I don't want to surrender my time here to something I'm not fully engaged in.

Deep Yawn

What is it with me and inconsistent posts? Completely forgot that I even had a blog at all until I happened to comment on some dude's report of an eBay SQL injection vulnerability. It's gotta be more than 30 times I've started a journal-type project, and completely forgotten about it. Hopefully this time will start rolling into a consistent blog.
Anyway... I've lately been in a skeptical mindset, constantly overthinking everything that pops into mind. It feels like it started right at the breaking hype of NSA's constitutionally questionable actions coming to public knowledge. Of course (trying not to sound haughtily prophetic), I always knew about PRISM, TURBINE, the PATRIOT act, XKeyscore, and all the other invasive surveillance systems for years. The interception of commercial and consumer hardware for tampering during shipment I figured was common knowledge. (It's always why I open my routers/modems to check the components against whitepaper schematics.) But what really rustled my jimmies was that the RSA had knowingly allowed the NSA to intentionally implement a flaw in its ECC mechanisms.
I should make one thing clear at this point. I have absolutely no problem with the NSA trying to crack existing security methods. That's cool stuff; it's human ingenuity at its finest. We learn that way, and improve on our mistakes and innovations through that kind of thinking. It's how we progress as a species. What I absolutely refuse to accept is the intentional hindrance of the progress of computer science in order to exploit systems. This is how advancement in technology is halted by petty human avarice. If they want access to my systems, fine. But they have to work for it. Invent new cryptographic circumvention mechanisms and use them. But don't, for f**k's sake, weaken the entire friggin' country's infrastructure just to make more money in the "war on drugs." (Heavy on the quotation marks.)
Here's something to chew on; really think on this, don't just pass it up. If China's notorious reputation for cyber-warfare is such a threat, why is the general public not more well-informed on methods of information security? The Tor framework was lambasted as a sanctuary for illegal drug transactions, questionable content such as child pornography, and secret terrorist communications. Because of this, anonymity of the citizenry as a whole has suffered from fear that use of the same framework for benign purposes would attract undue suspicion from local fusion centers and DEA crackdowns. TrueCrypt has been all but neglected by the majority of technology news blogs (with the exception of you few, wonderful nerd communities; you know who you are) and had to be audited for intentional vulnerabilities in its programming (widely due to speculation of government involvement in all closed-source security software). Only until recently has the legitimacy of the NSA's authority been called into question during the issuance of national security letters, gag orders, or other dubious methods of enforcing its stranglehold on the open internet. (When I say "open," I refer to freedom of technology, not privacy. Duh.)

Anywho, I've been constantly bedraggled by a nonstop barrage of litigious stupidity and dunderheaded bigotry. Digging too deep into controversy really stresses your mindset, not to mention your very identity, as you repeatedly question how disconnected some people (or parties) are from sensible, objective discussions. It's unbelievably frustrating watching someone just steep themselves in their ignominious blathering, and having to just shake my head as everyone else just nods in plebeian acceptance simply due to identical political, religious, or economic alignment with their own stance.
TL;DR: Want moar solid logos; too much ethos, pathos, rhetoric, and flat-out fallacious misdirection.

Roms & Droids

Just went through five different custom ROMS for the Motorola Droid and Droid X. My sister's Droid is now running Cyanogen 7, and Liberty is having a good ol' time on the X. I actually think I colud enjoy using the A855 as much as the X; the interface is feature-packed, and has plenty of functionality.

Wow, it’s dusty in here…

I’ve been gone for way too long. I’d totally forgotten about this blog, to be honest. Working at ImageSystems now. I’m the CTO, document processor, resident IT, and web author/designer here. Albeit no, I know next to nothing about web design, I did fairly well with the WYSIWYG editing of the company website.

I’m using Windows Live Writer 2011 to do this post, and I must say, it’s a far cry from inefficient. It’s got great functions.

Anyway, I am at work, so I need to keep my wages-to-profit ratio really high.

Sacrifices

I've decided on what I’ll do for the sale of my possessions. For the eMachine W2925, I’ll place all my files on my 250GB HDD, leaving it with the 120GB and 80GB internal HDDs. I don’t know whether to use Vista or not; the copy of Windows XP on there is already reasonably updated, and I’m debating leaving it as the only operating system on there.

For the HP Pavilion ZE5375 laptop, I’ve decided not to sell it, since I’ll be moving out soon; I’ll need a mobile computing ability. I’ll have all my information from the eMachine with me, using an adapter to enable USB access of the 250GB internal HDD. (It was an external HDD to begin with, before I modified it.)

The iPhone 3G will be sold; I have no intention of subscribing to AT&T’s bloodsucking contract for years to come. I know it’ll be harder to access my email this way, but It has to go. I need money.

So the eMachine and iPhone will be sold; the eMachine for $250, and the iPhone for $325. They’ll both be hitting craigslist soon…

At the Library

This is actually my first time using Windows Live Writer to post a blog. I found it easy to set up the program for use, and would definitely recommend it to users of decent-performance computers.

Now that I’ve totally given Microsoft free advertising…

Earlier today, my dad, sister, and I went to our grandparents’ house to finish working on bailing out the pool water. (We had been doing this for a couple weeks now…) This was the grand finale when I was able to finally see the drain (there was so much silt in the water, you couldn’t see 1” into it). My hands have hardened pads of calloused skin where the thin bucket handles cut into my fingers. It’s a good thing, though, because that means my hands are now that much tougher. (I sound like a Japanese anime character reflecting on oneself…)

On a less happy note, I came to the library with my laptop, only to find that the MCLD network administrators had blocked RuneScape’s domain. It’s too bad, because I had been able to play for only a couple days with my old in-game acquaintance from long past.

The search for a job still seems futile, but I’m sticking with it. If I’m not able to start contributing $200/month to a mutual fund with >=12% APR, then I’ll miss out on a multimillion-dollar retirement. (It’s all about how early you start investing.) I recommend everyone visit Dave Ramsey’s Investment Calculator to see just how simple it is. Since the average mutual fund investment growth is 12%, it’s a great opportunity for anyone that starts early, maintains a strong dedication toward their future, and has an emergency fund to avoid early investment withdrawals. I know I’m psyched to get started on mine…
